Coach

  • Purpose – Enhance/increase personal growth, success, well-being, happiness
  • Goal – Measurable, action-oriented, external change, progress visible
  • Process – Strategize to move toward goal through effective action steps
  • Level of Engagement – Relational, self-disclosure common to connect/motivate
  • Regulation – Not regulated, unethical to treat mental health unless also licensed counselor
  • Parameters of Operation – Sessions often through internet/phone. No Country/State barriers
  • Payment of Services – Not covered by insurance, sessions continue as long as helpful
  • Common Themes addressed in Coaching:

Counselor

  • Purpose – Reduction/remission of thinking/behaviors/feelings of problem
  • Goal – Minimize impact of destructive thoughts and behaviors, internal change
  • Process – Strategies to confront/reduce problem thinking and behaviors
  • Level of Engagement – Professional, minimal self-disclosure, only if pertinent to problem
  • Regulation – Regulated, Masters degree minimum, ethical to coach
  • Parameters of Operation – Sessions typically in office. Practice limited to sate of licensure
  • Payment of Services – Often covered (in part) by insurance, ONLY through symptom reduction
